Zoram Medical College Mizoram (ZMC) is the first medical college in Mizoram, India. It was inaugurated on August 7, 2018 by the Chief Minister of Mizoram Lal Thanhawla at the State Referral Hospital in Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram. The college is affiliated to Mizoram University and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The college offers undergraduate (MBBS) courses in various medical disciplines, with an annual intake capacity of 50 students. The admission to the college is based on the performance of the candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The college started its first academic session on January 12, 2021, with a batch of 100 MBBS students and 21 faculty members across four departments from a temporary campus located at Narakasur Hill-Top, Guwahati. In 2022, the college further expanded with the joining of the new batch of MBBS students as well as the faculty members of paraclinical and clinical specialty and super-specialty departments.
The college has a campus area of 84 acres, which includes an institutional complex, a hospital complex, hostels, and residential facilities. The college has a well-equipped campus with laboratories, lecture theatres, library, cafeteria, ATM and other facilities. The college also has a sports complex, a gymnasium and a cultural centre for the students.
The college is attached to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP Hospital), which is a 500-bedded teaching hospital that provides OPD and emergency services to the patients. The hospital has state-of-the-art amenities and facilities such as laboratories, operation theatres, intensive care units, blood bank, radiology and pharmacy. The college also has a research unit under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which conducts various projects on health issues relevant to the region.
The college has a faculty of experienced and qualified doctors and professors who guide and mentor the students in their academic and clinical pursuits. The college also organizes various academic and extracurricular activities for the students such as orientation programs, seminars, workshops, sports events, cultural events and social service camps¹². The college aims to develop model patterns of teaching in undergraduate medical education in all its branches to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India.
