The university was founded in 1404 by a papal bull of Pope Benedict XIII, and was originally composed of four faculties: arts, medicine, law, and theology. It became a center of learning and culture, attracting scholars and students from Italy and abroad. Among its notable alumni are Erasmus of Rotterdam, Joseph-Louis Lagrange, Cesare Lombroso, Rita Levi-Montalcini, and Umberto Eco.
Today, the university has 27 departments, 15 schools, and 4 extra-metropolitan campuses. The university is committed to internationalization and excellence, with many programs taught in English and partnerships with universities around the world. It participates in several European and global networks, such as the League of European Research Universities, the Coimbra Group, and the Venice International University. It is ranked among the top 10 universities in Italy and the top 500 in the world.
The university is located in various historical and modern buildings across Turin, a city that combines tradition and innovation, culture and nature, art and industry.
