North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute

NEIGRIHMS is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The institute is affiliated with North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. NEIGRIHMS offers UG, PG and Super-Speciality Courses in various specializations. It also offers B.Sc and M.Sc in Nursing for eligible candidates.

The institute was established in 1987 as a postgraduate medical institution like AIIMS, New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh. It was the first postgraduate medical institution in the North Eastern region, and the third in the country established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was registered as a society on January 12, 1987 by the Registrar of Societies, Meghalaya, Shillong. The institute was formally inaugurated and dedicated to the nation on March 5, 2010 by Smt Sonia Gandhi, the then chairperson of the UPA government.

The institute is located on the outskirts of Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya and the educational hub of the North Eastern region. The institute has a campus area of 189.2 acres, which includes an institutional complex, a hospital complex, hostels, and residential facilities. The institute has a well-equipped campus with laboratories, lecture theatres, library, cafeteria, ATM and other facilities. The institute also has a sports complex, a gymnasium and a cultural centre for the students2.

The institute offers undergraduate (MBBS) courses in various medical disciplines, with an annual intake capacity of 50 students. The admission to the institute is based on the performance of the candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The MBBS teaching programme of NEIGRIHMS started in 2008.

The institute also offers postgraduate (MD/MS) courses in various medical disciplines, such as anatomy, biochemistry, community medicine, dermatology, ENT, forensic medicine, microbiology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychiatry and radiology. The admission to the postgraduate courses is also based on NEET. The postgraduate courses started in 2009 with four subjects - anaesthesiology, microbiology, obstetrics & gynaecology and pathology. Later, more subjects were added such as general medicine, general surgery and radiodiagnosis and imaging.

The institute also offers super-speciality (DM/MCh) courses in four specializations - cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology and neurology. The admission to the super-speciality courses is also based on NEET. The super-speciality courses started in 2014 with cardiology as the first subject.

The institute also offers B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing courses for eligible candidates. The B.Sc Nursing course has an annual intake capacity of 50 students and the M.Sc Nursing course has an annual intake capacity of 10 students. The admission to these courses is based on an entrance examination conducted by NEIGRIHMS.  The College of Nursing started its courses from 20062.

The institute is attached to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP Hospital), which is a 531-bedded teaching hospital that provides OPD and emergency services to the patients. The hospital has state-of-the-art amenities and facilities such as laboratories, operation theatres, intensive care units, blood bank, radiology and pharmacy. The hospital also has a research unit under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which conducts various projects on health issues relevant to the region.
