
National Law University
National Law University (NLU) is a term used for law schools established in India, founded pursuant to the second-generation reforms for legal education sought to be implemented by the Bar Council of India³. The first NLU was the National Law School of India University, also known as NLSIU or NLU Bangalore, which admitted its first batch in 1988³. Currently, there are 26 NLUs in the country⁴.
Two of the most prominent NLUs are:
1. National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore: NLSIU was the first National Law University established in India to pioneer legal education reforms. The University has remained a leader in the field of legal education in India for over 30 years. NLSIU has been consistently ranked No 1 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework since 2018.
2. National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi): NLU Delhi has retained the second spot in the Law Category, in the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework². The primary objective of the University is to evolve and impart comprehensive and interdisciplinary legal education that is socially relevant.
Each NLU offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in law. They are known for their rigorous academic curriculum, extensive research opportunities, and vibrant campus life³. Admission to these universities is highly competitive and is based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) score.
