Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is a government medical college and hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam. It was established in 1900 as Berry White Medical School by British philanthropist Sir John Berry White, and became a full-fledged government medical college in 1947¹². It is the oldest medical institution in the North East region of India³⁴. The college is affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC)²³.
The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various medical disciplines, such as anatomy, biochemistry, community medicine, dermatology, forensic medicine, general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychiatry, radiology and others²³. The admission to the college is based on the performance of the candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses²³. The college has an annual intake of 200 MBBS students and 75 nursing students².
The college has a well-equipped campus with laboratories, lecture theatres, library, cafeteria, ATM and other facilities. The college also has a sports complex, a gymnasium and a cultural centre for the students². The college is attached to the Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), which is a 750-bedded teaching hospital that provides OPD and emergency services to the patients. The hospital has state-of-the-art amenities and facilities, such as laboratories, operation theatres, intensive care units, blood bank, radiology, pharmacy etc²³. The college also has a research unit under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which conducts various projects on health issues relevant to the region.
