More Indian Colleges and Universities Make Their Place in QS World Rankings of Top 100
The latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 has revealed that more Indian colleges and universities have made their place in the global top 100 for various subjects, especially in the STEM fieldsAd1. A total of 44 programs from different campuses in India have been ranked among the top 100, an increase from 35 last year2.
The highest-ranked program from India is the petroleum engineering program from IIT Bombay, which has secured the 30th position globally. Other notable programs that have entered the top 50 are chemical engineering from IIT Delhi (47th), electrical engineering from IIT Madras (48th), and civil engineering from IIT Bombay (49th)2.
Apart from these, two Indian institutes have also placed under top-100 ranks in Business and Management. These are IIM Bangalore (76th) and IIM Ahmedabad (80th)3. This is the first time that two Indian B-schools have made it to the top 100 in this subject2.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and H-index. The rankings cover 51 subjects across five broad areas: arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and managementAd1.
The rankings also show that India has improved its research impact, with several institutes achieving high scores for citations per faculty. IISc Bangalore has emerged as the world’s top research university for this indicator, with a perfect score of 100/100. IIT Guwahati (37th), IIT Roorkee (47th), and University of Madras (48th) are also among the global top 50 for this indicator4.
However, no Indian institute has managed to break into the top 150 of the overall QS World University Rankings 2023, which were released earlier this month. The highest-ranked institute from India is IISc Bangalore, which has moved up 31 places to rank 155th globally. It is followed by IIT Bombay (172nd) and IIT Delhi (174th)4.
