All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Guwahati

AIIMS Guwahati is one of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, a group of autonomous public medical colleges of national importance in India. It was established in 2017 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) to provide quality tertiary level healthcare and medical education in the North East region of India¹². The institute is located in Changsari, near Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. The institute has a campus area of 189.2 acres, which includes an institutional complex, a hospital complex, hostels, and residential facilities²³.

The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various medical disciplines, recognized by the Medical Council of India. The admission to the institute is based on the performance of the candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses⁴. The institute has an annual intake of 125 MBBS students and 75 nursing students². The institute started its first academic session on January 12, 2021, with a batch of 50 MBBS students and 21 faculty members across four departments from a temporary campus located at Narakasur Hill-Top, Guwahati²³. In 2022, the institute further expanded with the joining of the new batch of MBBS students as well as the faculty members of paraclinical and clinical specialty and super-specialty departments².

The institute has a 750-bedded teaching hospital attached to it, named Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, which provides OPD and emergency services to the patients. The hospital is equipped with all state-of-the-art amenities and facilities, such as laboratories, operation theatres, intensive care units, blood bank, radiology, pharmacy, etc²³. The institute also has a research unit under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which conducts various projects on health issues relevant to the region².

The institute has a faculty of experienced and qualified doctors and professors who guide and mentor the students in their academic and clinical pursuits. The institute also organizes various academic and extracurricular activities for the students, such as orientation programs, seminars, workshops, sports, cultural events, and social service camps²³. The institute aims to develop model patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India².
